Introduction
The Federal Government of Nigeria’s vision of renewable energy in the power sector is the achievement of accelerated sustainable development through affordable access to reliable renewable electric power.
Access to electricity services is critical to achieving economic and social development targets outlined in the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Federal Government of Nigeria is committed to reaching these sustainable development targets through the full mobilization of the electricity sector. Renewable energy presents unique opportunities to scaling up access to electricity services and meeting NEEDs targets and the MDGs.
In the pursuit of these objectives, the Federal Government seeks the establishment of a ten-year Renewable Electricity Action Program (REAP). The REAP provides the framework to implement the Renewable Electricity Policy and Regulatory Guidelines.
