Introduction to Nigeria Gas Master Plan ESM279
The Strategic Nigeria Gas Master Plan described here seeks to build upon the recent or ongoing initiatives in the gas or related sectors in Nigeria to assess and select the best market structure and public-private infrastructure (PPI) options available to the downstream gas industry.
Nigeria is one of the world’s best-endowed and largest oil-producing countries and it has an equally great amount of undeveloped gas resources in reserve. If oil has played a key role in helping develop Nigeria’s economy, gas has yet to contribute its share.
Instead, Nigeria is known as one of the largest gas-flaring countries in the world. In response, the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has instructed all oil producers that gas flaring must cease by 2008 and has enlisted the World Bank to investigate the ways and means to help achieve this ambitious goal.
